OUR VISION
DESIGN STATUS SUMMER 2020

With the headline “MINIMAL IMPACT – MAXIMUM OUTPUT (MI-MO)“ our contribution is based on the following fundamental ideas:

  • Developing a resilient building structure that is exemplary for the topics of densification and affordable and sustainable housing.
  • Establishment of shared areas and infrastructure offers (energy and mobility) within the project to increase the quality of life in the neighbourhood.
  • Involvement of the entire district in the actual building task and, consequently, the understanding of the new building as part of a holistically conceived urban development.
  • Designing a consistently sustainable material and design concept that reduces on-site construction time with a modular approach, pre-fabricated components and the benefits of digital planning and production techniques, minimizing the emissions associated with construction.
  • Careful integration of technical building technologies for using renewable energies on-site and their logical interaction with the building structure or the quarter under the constant consideration of the appropriateness in the field of tension of effort, benefit and (energetic) yield respectively stress of the neighbourhood.
  • Avoiding energy demands as much as possible including an adequate mix of low-tech strategies and appropriate technical options. The use of technological innovation is always balanced against passive measures in the context of sufficiency and the creation of affordable housing.

MINIMAL IMPACT MAXIMUM OUTPUT

The MI-MO team faces the competition with the route “Minimal Impact - Maximum Output” and takes on a real challenge of energy-efficient urban renovation and redensification: the expansion of a cultural center in the Mirke district of Wuppertal with residential uses. In addition to architectural, procedural and technical challenges, the team is required to inform and inspire the people in the neighborhood and to enable them to become part of an urban energy transition with their own resources. According to the team slogan, only what should be done that offers the place added value and creates maximum benefit with minimal interference.

Plan and build in an environmentally conscious way
SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL CONCEPT

The increase is to be realized in timber construction. For several years now, wood has been the ideal solution for sustainable and resource-saving construction. The aim of the project will be to think and implement building with wood in a consistently sustainable and resource-saving way. In detail, the selected structural and building concept should lead to a reduction in the required material. The use of predominantly solvent- and binder-free building materials in combination with connection techniques that are reversible and easy to loosen enable easy separation in the event of later dismantling.
The digital production possibilities of timber construction can be fully exploited. Most of the components are pre-assembled from the 3D model in the computer and manufactured directly in the joinery. The approach of the pre-element construction also fits in very well with the digital planning and production method.

PLAN & Build
1: 1 DESIGN

We are currently working on further developing the concepts for the addition of Café Ada:
In June 2022, a section of the extension is to be brought to Wuppertal as a 1: 1 demonstrator in the form of a fully functional, one to two-story residential building. The design shown here is just one of many designs that have emerged. The most exciting concepts are currently being used as a basis and are being turned upside down by students and teachers in the Department of Architecture.
SOLAR POWER

The position of the slats can according to Solar radiation to optimize the electricity yield and shading as well as ventilation of the climate envelope vary.
CLIMATE HELL

The climate envelope offers additional lounge areas. Natural ventilation and solar radiation are used according to the time of day and season.
HEAT SUPPLY

The heat supply combines local energy sources and the use of waste heat from white goods in the apartments and central facilities.

Innovative Technologies
"ENERGIBUS4HOME"

The current research project "energiBUS4home" examines the use of renewable energies on site and their logical interaction up to a functional model. To use additional low-temperature heat sources, wastewater from the bathroom and kitchen or a solar system could be used.

WHAT WE ARE WORKING ON

- Integration of a multifunctional
Heat pump system as hardware-in-the-loop in a low-voltage network model.

- Construction and testing of a functional model for the functional and energetic coupling of household appliances and the heating and ventilation technology of low-energy buildings.

- Heat consumers are integrated directly into the storage circuit or into the system via a domestic hot water station.

- Simultaneous use of heating and cooling energy is made possible by coupling the household appliances to the heat pump of the heating / ventilation system.

- Reduction of self-consumption of household appliances. Increased efficiency of the overall system
